Vice-Minister Jiang Zengwei's Speech at the Opening Ceremony of “Chinese Import and Export Commodities Exhibition & Investment Conference (Malaysia) 2007”

Respected Deputy Minister Husni, respected ambassador Cheng Yonghua, ladies and gentlemen, good morning!

The Chinese Import and Export Commodities Exhibition & Investment Conference (Malaysia) 2007, the fourth session of its kind, hosted by MOFCOM, is officially opened today. On behalf of China’s Ministry of Commerce, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dato' Haji Ahmad Husni bin Mohamad Hanaziah, Deputy Minister of Malaysia’s International Trade and Industry Ministry, distinguished guests and friends present at the opening ceremony. I would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce for their great support to the exhibition.

As friendly close neighbors, China and Malaysia have enjoyed a time-honored friendship. The China-Malaysia trade and economic cooperation has seen rapid development since the two countries established diplomatic ties 33 years ago. According to statistics from China’s Customs, their trade totaled USD $37.1 bn in 2006, an increase of more than 230 times and it is expected to surpass USD $45 bn this year. China and Malaysia are important trading partners of each other. China has become Malaysia’s largest export market of palm oil and caoutchouc, and the fourth largest export market of the latter’s electronic products.

With the rapid development of bilateral trade, the two-way investment between China and Malaysia has also made tremendous progress. By the end of last September, Malaysia’s actual investment in China has exceeded USD $4.5 bn. With China’s continuous increase of economic strength and the implementation of the “going global” strategy, more and more Chinese enterprises start investing in and cooperating with Malaysia, which enjoys a fast economic growth and has an investment-friendly environment. The Chinese government encourages and supports competitive Chinese enterprises to make investment in and conduct win-win cooperation with Malaysia.

Aiming at boosting the friendly exchanges between China and Malaysia and other ASEAN countries, as well as promoting the bilateral trade relations, MOFCOM hosted, with energetic support from the Malaysian government and industrial and commercial circles, the Chinese Import and Export Commodities Exhibition. Such an exhibition has been held successfully for three times since 2004, and a good image has been set up for both Chinese and Malaysian enterprises. This year, the number of enterprise exhibitors has exceeded 200, and over 8,000 buyers are expected to be present at the 2007 exhibition. I am confident that this exhibition will surely play an active role in boosting China-Malaysia trade and economic cooperation.

Ladies and gentlemen,

China’s economy has maintained a comparatively fast growth rate since the adoption of its reform and opening up 30 years ago. China’s GDP had increased by 11 times from USD $216.5 bn in 1978 to USD $2.6 tn in 2006, and the GDP per capita reached USD $2,000. China’s open and robust economy has pumped new vitality and momentum into the development of world economy. By the year 2010, China’s commodity and service trade value shall exceed USD $2.3 tn and $400 bn respectively. World Tourism Organization forecasted that by the year 2010 over 50 mn Chinese tourists will join the outbound travel. China and ASEAN countries are close neighbors and are highly economically complementary. China’s tremendous market will provide even wider market and more business opportunities for Malaysia and other ASEAN countries.

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is in the fundamental interests of both countries to further strengthen China-Malaysia friendly cooperation. Expanding the mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation between our two countries will input more substantial contents to China-Malaysia friendly relations and bring about more benefits to the two peoples. China is willing to work with Malaysia and conduct mutually beneficial cooperation and incessantly attain new progress in the bilateral trade and economic cooperation of the two countries on the basis of the principle of “Equality, Mutual Benefit and Common Development”.

In conclusion, I wish the Chinese Import and Export Commodities Exhibition & Investment Conference (Malaysia) 2007 every success.
