Ladies, Gentlemen and Friends:
Good Morning!
On behalf of the Ministry of Commerce and the Organizing Committee of the 2nd China Catering Expo, I would like to extend my warm welcome and sincere thanks to all the guests present here!
Catering services is one of the important domestic commerce sectors under the mandate of the Ministry of Commerce. Let me take this opportunity to brief you on the reasons why MOFCOM attaches so much importance to the development of catering industry. First of all, catering is an industry directly related with people's subsistence. An old saying goes like "people regard food as their prime want". When China has entered the new stage of building in an all-round way a well-off society from the previous stage featuring people in the country just having enough to eat and wear, the catering industry has a bearing not only on the life quality and living standard of the general public, but also on their consumption safety and healthy, and the jobs of about 2000 people as well. Second, catering is an significant industry that drives up the domestic demand. Since the 1970's, the Chinese catering sector has maintained an increase rate of over 10% for 15 years in a row. In 2005, the total turnover of the catering sector amounted to RMB888.7 billion, up by 17.7%, 4.8% higher than, and contributing 17.4% to the growth of the total retail sales of consumer goods. In 2005, the national average per capita consumption in catering was RMB680, 118 times more than that in 1978 when the reform initiative began. It is expected to hit RMB800 in 2006, and the retail sales in the catering sector in China is predicted to exceed RMB1 trillion. The rapidly growing catering sector has become an important driving force to lift the domestic demand and expand people’s consumption. Third, catering is a sun-rise industry with huge potential to grow. China has a population of 1.3 billion people and is also the biggest catering market in the world. With the further liberalization of the Chinese market, faster urbanization, improvement of the living standard of urban and rural residents, and the vigorous development of tourism, China’s catering sector will continue to be injected with new vitality. Therefore, as the competent authority in charge of domestic trade, the Ministry of Commerce must endeavor to create favorable conditions and a good environment for the high-speed and healthy development of the catering sector.
Now, please allow me to touch upon the objective and significance of the Expo. Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and People's Government of Shaanxi Province, and supported by Xi'an Municipal Government, China Hospitality Association, Chinese Cuisine Association and the Department of Commerce of Shaanxi Province, the 2nd China Catering Expo will be held on Oct. 18 in Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi province. As a superior exhibition, the Expo is a priority project sponsored by MOFCOM. Minister Bo Xilai pays great attention to it and made an instruction to further expand this international event and make it more successful. Then, why shall we try all means to make it successful?
First, the Expo is an important platform for pushing forward the development of the catering sector. In order to better promote development of this sector, and actively expand the domestic consumption, MOFCOM will take a series of steps in such areas as information release, industry regulation and standards, the adoption of name brand promotion strategy, and intensified efforts in human resource training. The Expo is a major step. MOFCOM will take this opportunity to play a leading guiding role in mobilizing the initiative of the local industry authorities and trade associations, and the enthusiasm of people inside and outside of the catering circle, and in building an effective platform for the orderly and better regulated development of the catering sector by means of combining trade fairs with industry management, name brand nurturing with innovation, business activities with promotion efforts, and industrial events with international exchanges.
Second, the Expo is an important showcase that is helpful to push forward the catering culture exchanges between China and the rest of the world. With thousands of years of history, catering in China boasts an extensive, profound and long-lasting culture. In recent years there have been increasingly frequent commercial and cultural exchanges between China and other countries in the world. The eastern and western catering cultures are also integrating with each other. In 2005, there were 894 foreign-invested projects in China in the catering sector with committed investment of US$1.04 billion. Representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Japan will be invited to take part in the 2nd Catering Expo in order to promote the international exchanges. It will not only be a national event popularizing the Chinese catering culture, but also a stage showcasing the traditional national culture of China as an ancient civilization and a big nation in terms of fine cuisine.
Third, the Expo is a crucial stage showcasing the name brands in the catering sector of China. In recent years, modern catering enterprises in the form of chain stores, brand operation and technology innovation has been replacing the position of the traditional catering featuring family workshop and random business operation based on personal experience. In order to cater to this trend, the 2nd China Catering Expo will take "The Development of Chinese Catering Brands and their International Expansion" as the theme, which is also a special feature of year 2006. As a support to the “Name Brand Promotion Campaign” sponsored by MOFCOM, the Expo will also highlight the name brand strategy by such initiatives as setting up a special area to display 100 key brand names of Chinese catering companies, and organizing lecture series on Chinese traditional name brand IPR protection in the catering sector. The Expo is expected to cover 20,000 m2 of exhibition area which can accommodate 30,000 visits of professionals, and over 100,000 ordinary visitors.
Ladies and Gentlemen, intense efforts are going on in preparation for the 2nd China Catering Exp. We believe that through the concerted efforts of all government departments, industry organizations, and the Chinese and foreign catering enterprises, and the kind support and assistance of friends from the media, the 2nd China Catering Expo will definitely be a great success.
Thank you!
